I have been pursuing a passion for cycling for more than 30 years. My trajectory began as an enthusiastic mountain biker in junior high and high school and it quickly evolved from racing on dirt to racing on the road. After regional successes as a mountain bike and road racer, I moved to Belgium to chase my dream of becoming a professional cyclist.

After 2 years of racing the amateur circuit in Flanders and Wallonie, I was offered a professional contract with Tonissteiner-Colnago. I went on to race for 15 years on five different pro teams including Navigators, Healthnet, BMC, and UnitedHealthcare.

➤ MY PHILOSOPHY

I developed a training philosophy that is informed by the experiences I gained from racing, training, and being exposed to some of the best riders, coaches, and sports physicians in the profession. I believe successful training is an art as much as a science and have had the honor of coaching hundreds of passionate athletes to reach their own goals since my retirement from racing in 2014.

Every cyclist is an individual with their own specific needs, strengths, motivations, and tendencies. What works for one doesn’t necessarily work for the other. In my career, I made many mistakes but made sure to always learn from them. Through trial and error, I discovered what worked for me and what didn’t. I also observed my peers and saw what was or wasn't  working for them. Through all of this experience, I learned that trusting sensation, confidence, and a close relationship with a coach were the most important aspects of success.

I had the most success when I worked with a coach and the best coaches I had were the ones who treated our relationships as a partnership. My goal with every athlete I work with is to build the type of relationship that allows us to work together to find the clearest path to success. This is where the art comes in — everyone has different needs and motivations and the better the communication the greater the understanding and improvement.

He’s a phenomenal coach who tailored my workouts around my travel schedule and always adjusted them according to my feedback . . . I was most impressed by how he helped me prepare for and eventually win the CX Nationals in 2018. Great coach and great guy.”

➤ WHY COACHING MATTERS

There is a lot of information out there about training and racing. The hardest part is sifting through all of the science and opinion to find what works for each individual. With so much available information, it is easy to feel lost and searching for a clear path. Without a coach it can become hard to see the forest for the trees. All the passion and drive in the world is easily misguided if you can’t see the path forward due to too much interference coming from an overabundance of information and emotional attachment. A good coach can hover above, so to speak, and help guide the athlete along the best path toward their goal.

My aim as a cycling coach is to listen to an individual's wants and needs and then help them make informed decisions so that their time is well spent and effective. This approach has led to many successes. I work with every level of athlete and their goals are all different. But the approach and personal attention is always the same. I have helped my clients win National Championships, attain World Tour contracts, ride across the United States, win big races, set personal bests and KOMs, and most importantly, enjoy the work while meeting whatever goal they have set out to achieve. I believe in cycling and have a passion for helping every level of athlete.
